"What's the difference between a Psychologist, Psychiatrist, and Psychosocial Counsellor?"

Psychologist: A professional qualified through graduate studies in psychology, alongside training in clinical psychology (which includes a master’s degree, internship, and registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and HPCSA registration - in South Africa you can register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) in 9 categories) and who provides testing and counselling services to patients with mental and emotional disorders.

Psychiatrist: Medical Doctor (practitioner of the science of medicine - HPCSA registration) with additional medical training and experience in the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders.

Psychosocial Counsellor: person who is qualified by graduate study in Social Work (e.g. University of Stellenbosch is 4 years) and registered with the South African Association of Social Service Professionals (SACSSP). They consider the dynamic relationship between psychological and social effects of experiences, and offers counselling, psychotherapy and mediation services to individuals, families and groups to effect psycho-social change.
